Hair care – Special applications

[Translate to English:] Spezifische Haarpflege

Treating specific hair and scalp problems with precisely defined symptoms requires special hair care applications. Through careful selection of ingredients and actives, solutions can be found for all hair problems. Whether your application is for alleviating an irritated or itchy scalp, for preventing hair-loss, for anti-aging or anti-dandruff care, or for protecting coloured hair – our extensive product range offers the right ingredients for you.

Sensitive scalp care

A sensitive scalp is one of the most frequent problems of all, with various possible causes. The most common cause is an atopic skin disposition with a tendency towards extreme dryness, irritations and eczema (neurodermatitis) (1). The scalp can also develop a sensitivity to the very cleaning agents, aromas, preservatives or colourings contained in shampoos.

If the skin’s natural protective barrier is disrupted by one or more of these factors, then the result is microinflammations in the scalp and therefore increased sensitivity (2). Microinflammations cannot be seen with the naked eye, but they can eventually give way to a “visible” inflammation if allowed to persist for too long. Dermocosmetic active ingredients can act against these silent inflammations and reduce the hypersensitivity of the scalp. Active agents that boost the protective skin barrier are also suitable for sensitive scalp care.

Anti-dandruff care

Dandruff occurs mostly as a result of overproduction of corneal cells and can be caused, for example, by overpopulation of certain fungi or bacteria. These germ populations can also cause an excess flow of sebum (seborrhoea). Due to inflammation, the corneal cells do not fully mature and instead scale off in large cell bunches – as dandruff flakes. Through the loss of skin cells, the outer skin layer becomes thinner. Severe dandruff thus also leads to increased sensitivity of the scalp. Common results of this are severe itching and reddening (3).

Therefore, antimicrobial substances that act against the dandruff-inducing microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and yeasts) are suitable for caring for dandruff-prone skin. Sebum-reducing actives also reduce dandruff formation and soothe irritated skin on the scalp.

Care for oily hair

Those with a tendency towards oily hair often feel poorly groomed despite good hygiene, and see their hair as a beauty flaw. In truth, oily hair is the result of a natural process: the sebaceous glands at the hair root produce oil (also called sebum). This keeps our hair healthy and supple and prevents it from drying out. If the glands produce too much sebum, however, the hair becomes oily. Accordingly, there is demand for suitable care products like shampoos that contain special surfactants capable of binding excess sebum as well as actives that regulate sebum production.

Anti-aging measures in hair care

Like skin, the hair and scalp are subject to biological aging. The aging process begins already at an age of 25–40 as a result of slowing metabolism. The hair and scalp are then no longer adequately supplied with the nutrients required for healthy growth.

With age, the hair structure also changes. Two of the nine keratin types known so far stop being fully produced. The low concentration of these essential keratin components means the hair no longer has the optimum combination of keratins for building a healthy hair structure. Compounding this is the fact that head hair thins out as we age, and many men and even women find themselves concerned about hair loss.

Active ingredients suitable for antiaging hair care products are those that slow the aging process of the scalp, reduce hair loss and strengthen the hair.

Care that protects the colour of hair

Most people discover their first grey hairs at the age of about 35, and these appear with the age-related decrease in melanin production in the body. To uphold today's ideal of beauty, however, and to maintain a youthful appearance, the recourse is to rush to the hairdresser's or buy a product to dye one's own hair. Modern hair colouring formulations make it easier to conceal grey hairs effectively. Colour-refreshing hair care products help to keep the colour fresh, glossy and beautiful for as long as possible.
