The world of oils is vast. So, what do we mean by oils in the field of cosmetics? What types are there, and how do you reach high performance while achieving a beautiful touch? You will find answers and exciting formulas from our laboratory in our new technical concept: Oil inclusive – New ways to care, remove, rinse, & protect.

The variety of products on the market is increasing

In recent years, oil-based cosmetics have gained enormous popularity in both the leave-on and rinse-off segments:

  • Virtually no skincare line can be considered complete without a luxurious face or body oil.
  • In the hair care sector, nourishing hair and scalp oils are now an important segment. They are meant to condition and smooth the hair or sooth the scalp.
  • Even in the cleansing sector, we are seeing more and more shower oils, oil shampoos, and face cleansing oils. These combine a strong power for cleansing sebum, dirt, or make-up with with the ability to leave the skin moisturized and not dried out.

The specific technical challenges of oil-based formulations

Heavy oil products are out of fashion. When creating new oil-based formulations, it is often a challenge to achieve that light, easy-spread, silicone-like feel on the skin and hair. Especially with textures that are preferably free of silicones and PEG derivatives.

Inspiration from the IMPAG Lab: Oil-inclusive … All-inclusive!

Our Applications Laboratory has brought the Oil Inclusive project to life. It is all about embracing the multitudinous variety of oils out there. In Focus: the myriad ways in which you can work with plant oils, esters, emollients, and much more.

The result: three new formulas that are free of silicones and PEG derivatives.

The following technical challenges were the main ones to tackle:

  • Wash-off ease and cleansing power of oils.
  • Playtime and absorption behaviour.
  • Solubility of organic sun filters.
  • Incorporation of oil-soluble active ingredients.
