Soluble corn fibre offers many different advantages and is used in all kinds of food categories. Whether as a fibre enrichment or filler in reduced sugar products, our soluble Promitor® corn fibre fits to a wide variety of applications.

Status Quo: fibre in our normal diet

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a minimum intake of 25 g of dietary fibre per day, most people never truly get that amount. Nevertheless, many consumers are aware of the importance of dietary fibre, and this has led to a significant increase in demand for products that are rich in fibre.

Producers are faced with a diverse set of challenges for producing high-fibre products:

  • High fibre content increases the difficulty of processing
  • Fibres only have poor stability in processing
  • The taste of the food can suffer
  • Consumers can have poor digestive tolerance of certain fibres (bloating, cramps)
  • Unattractive declarations can result in low acceptance of a food product

The products from the Promitor® range address these issues by offering many advantages:

  • 100% water solubility even at high dosages
  • Unique stability against heat, shear, and acid – even over long storage periods and shelf-life
  • Neutral taste
  • Outstanding tolerability (up to 65 g per day)
  • Clean Label & high customer acceptance
  • Dietary fibre content of 70–85% depending on type

Promitor® – your best friend for sugar reduction

Sugar reduction is another goal that poses various challenges for the food producer. "High-intensity" sweeteners like sucralose and stevia only solve the lack of sweetness and flavour-enhancing properties. Combining them with Promitor® solves these and other challenges as well:

  • Improves mouthfeel in drinks, snacks, emulsions, etc.
  • Maintains moistness and improves shelf life of liquid fillings, snacks, & co.
  • Optimizes the processability of doughs, masses, and liquids
  • Is easy to dose as a liquid syrup or as a powder

Given the low residual sugar content of Promitor®, end products can carry the "sugar free", "sugar-reduced", or "no added sugar" claims.

Not all soluble fibres are equal

Promitor® stands apart from competitors' fibres in particular for its good tolerability and high stability. Many soluble fibres (such as fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and inulin) are in the class of FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols) and therefore can only be consumed in relatively small quantities without noticeably causing bloating or cramps, when compared to Promitor®. This soluble corn fibre, in addition, remains stable even over prolonged storage periods and under low pH, heat exposure, and shear. This is not the case with other fibres, which split under harsh conditions into fragments with a high fermentation potential. That, in turn, increases the risk of poor digestive tolerance.

Sugar alcohols are another option for reducing sugar. They have the advantage of adding a certain sweetness, but often come with an undesirable aftertaste. Furthermore, sugar alcohols also count among the FODMAPs and can only be used in small quantities.

Conclusion

In looking after their health, or for managing their weight, more and more consumers are turning to fibre-rich, sugar-free, and sugar-reduced foods. Yet, at the same time, many consumers remain sceptical towards the classical products in this category. In particular, they still tend to expect these products to be inferior in terms of flavour, texture, or tolerability compared to the full sugar variants.

The Tate & Lyle portfolio, which includes the Promitor® range, Sta-Lite® polydextrose, sucralose, and stevia products, helps to surpass these expectations.

We look forward to your enquiries, and will be happy to help you with our technological know-how in matters of dietary fibre, sugar reduction, and fibre enrichment.
